When Joshua Davis performed on NBC’s The Voice, America at-large finally discovered what Michiganders have known for more than two decades. This amazing artist connects with a live audience, nourishes their souls and feeds off of their love. Seeing him live has always revealed his core which has been captured on his latest recording Live At The Robin. His first live solo acoustic release, recorded in the intimate environment of The Robin Theatre in Lansing, MI, was well suited for catching him in his element. Joshua remains a quintessentially Michigan Songwriter, drawing his inspiration from the rough-and-tumble streets of Motown to the arboreal Upper Peninsula. The mitten is his muse.

Live from the Robin captures that essence in a way that pares his songs down to their emotional, musical and lyrical roots with scattered stories revealing the origins of some of these songs that we know and love. Recorded over the span of two nights, this documents a raw and revealing glimpse of an artist who has his finger on the pulse of a culture, a culture that lives, loves and laughs, cries, mourns and heals. Joshua’s authenticity plucks all of the right heartstrings, soars on the updrafts and plumbs the depths of the human experience. This is a deep and warm conversation with a room full of old friends.

“I’ve wanted to make this album for years”, says Davis. “And I’m so excited to share it. I love playing solo shows. It allows me the freedom to dig deep into my songs and really be in the moment with the audience.”

I’ve wanted to release a collection of covers for quite a while now and after pouring everything I had into my last album, it felt like the right time. I called up Mike Lynch, Michael Shimmin and Drew Howard and we gathered at one-of-a-kind all-analog studio the The Goon Lagoon and rolled tape. No computer screens, no auto-tune, no bullshit. Just one or two takes of each tune in a beautiful room.

The music that moves me is imperfect, honest and raw. Those qualities are what turned me on to Delta blues, to punk rock, to old soul and traditional music from all over the globe. It’s all about feel. It’s ragged but right.

It was an important moment for me to take a step back and remember why I love music so much. That feeling when a song hits you in the gut, gives you goosebumps, makes you think, makes you cry. On Secondhand, songs from friends Jen Sygit and David Fetzer sit alongside tunes from some of my other favorites like Tom WaitsTownes Van Zandt and St. Vincent. These are songs that I love.

This project served as a reminder to me that what I value - and not only in music - is not perfection, but heart, hard work and community. From my heart to yours, I hope that these songs will speak to you in a familiar way.

"His heartfelt documentation of 'people as people' offers up compassionate songs of hope, darkness and perseverance."

- Revue Magazine

"In 2012, Joshua Davis joined On the Ground for the Run Across Palestine and what was to be a truly life-changing journey. The focus of the 5 day, 129 mile ultra marathon was to raise funds and awareness in support of fair-trade olive farming communities in the Palestinian West Bank. Says Josh, 'The stories and songs on ‘A Miracle of Birds’, released one year after the run, are honest expressions of my experiences in the West Bank, colored by my own unique history and upbringing.’" Traverse Gourmet Magazine

"Aside from discussing his personal life, Davis also addresses concerns of many Michiganians, including the environment and the economy. 'The Workingman’s Hymn' talks of the erosion of the middle class and the divide between the rich and the poor. The song contains a positive message with Davis repeating, 'I know we can turn it around.’ 'I definitely wanted it to be uplifting,' Davis said. 'I listened to a lot of gospel music. People have pulled together through that kind of music through the worst times. That was my inspiration for the song.’”
